The Liberal Party has selected its candidates for two western Sydney seats as the 2025 federal election looms, with one attempting to hang onto her seat and the other looking to defeat a Labor incumbent.
Current Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh will fight to hold onto her seat of Lindsay, which includes Penrith, while Hawkesbury councillor Mike Creed will take on Labor MP Susan Templeman in the neighbouring division of Macquarie.
Mr Creed was re-elected as a Liberal councillor for Hawkesbury in September, having previously served a term from 2012 to 2016.
He was previously the owner of Penrith’s first pet-friendly cafe.
In a statement announcing he was contesting the far western Sydney seat at next year’s federal poll, he said he would “fight to protect” the area’s “unique character” and be a “strong advocate” for businesses and families during the cost-of-living crisis.
He promised to bring more funding for services and infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, roads and sporting facilities, if elected.
“Only a Liberal government will take the pressure off households by reigning in Labor’s inflationary spending and bringing the budget under control,” he said.
“Liberal governments have the proven track record of delivering lower interest rates and lower taxes, and the only way to get the infrastructure and service our community needs is by voting Liberal.”
He will take on Ms Templeman, described on her website as a former journalist and small business owner, who won the seat from former Liberal MP Susan Markus in 2016.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Lindsay, current Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh will be recontesting the seat she took from Labor’s Diane Beamer in 2019.
In a biography on her website, Ms McIntosh is described as a former small business owner who “(understands) the importance of backing small businesses and investing in our local infrastructure”.
Other candidates for the two divisions are yet to be announced.
