A new childcare centre, capable of caring for 53 children at any given time, could be built in St Marys under a $1.7 million development application lodged with Penrith Council.
The proposal would see an existing residential premises on Cutler Ave demolished and replaced with a modern two-storey facility with a total floor area of 384sq m.
The centre would have eight educators to look after 53 children — eight children from zero to two, 15 children aged two or three and 30 children aged three to five.
The proposed centre would be open from 7am to 7pm from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), with outdoor play time planned between 8.30am and 10am, and then again between 4.15pm and 6.30pm.
To reduce potential noise disturbance, staff will be instructed to take any child making excessive noise inside until they have been settled, according to the DA.
The facility would have 14 basement carparking spaces for staff and parents.
According to a Statement of Environmental Effects attached to the development application, there is “a preference for low-density housing in the area rather than medium-density development”.
It said “the development proposes a contemporary two-storey built form that will not only increase valuable childcare service to the local community, but provides an appropriate building form that will be compatible and also complement the existing low-density built form character along Cutler Ave”.
The proposed centre is located about 550 metres from the existing Blinky Bills Preschool on Australia St and about 600 metres from Oxley Park Public School.
Baini design, the company who applied for the DA, has been contacted for comment.
