THE creepy American-born trend of people dressing up as scary clowns hit Emu Plains in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A clown was photographed wandering casually outside Nepean High at 1.12am and the image was posted to the @TheClownHunters page on Facebook – one of many pages dedicated to the new craze.
The page also reported “clowns have revealed they will spread around Penrith, Cranebrook, Cambo (Cambridge Park) and Mt Druitt’’.
Last week there were sightings of clowns in the Macarthur region prompting police to issue a stern warning there.
The trend started in South Carolina after men dressed as clowns were trying to lure children into the woods.
Many of the ‘clowns’ have been posting to Facebook pages claiming they will be at a certain area at any given time.
After a woman in Brisbane almost ran over a clown that suddenly appeared in front of her with a knife, police warned that it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt.
“There’s the potential for retaliation or people could be seriously hurt or could die by trying to get away,” Campbelltown Police Inspector Tara Norton said.
“You also don’t know if the person has a physical condition or mental condition where this behaviour could have disastrous effects.”
Some of the comments on the clown picture in Emu Plains included violent threats against the clowns as some members of the public declared they’d fight back against the phenomenon.
This week a rally called “Clown Lives Matter’’ is to be held in Tucson, Arizona, in an attempt to uphold the good reputation of clowns.
