An Emerton man has been accused of attacking a pregnant woman before arming himself with a kitchen knife and making stabbing motions towards her, a court heard.

Connor Jones faced Parramatta Local Court on Thursday via video link from custody after being charged with a string of domestic violence offences.

The court heard the vulnerable woman was punched in the jaw and sought refuge in the bedroom of a Cambridge Park home where Jones allegedly followed her, slapped her and held her down by the neck on June 16.

The 20-year-old allegedly threatened to stab the woman, retrieved a kitchen knife and threatened to stab the complainant.

Jones was arrested about a week later and taken to Penrith Police Station, where he was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, being armed to commit an indictable offence, two counts of common assault, stalking or intimidation and one AVO breach. He has not entered pleas.

The alleged offences took place a month after Jones was given a community corrections order, the court heard.

At his court appearance, Jones’ lawyer Daniel Gaudiello lodged a bail application on his client’s behalf.

“He is a young man with Indigenous Australian heritage and would be a vulnerable inmate,” he said.

“He has never served a full-time custodial sentence, had a warrant, breached bail or been convicted for a violence-related matter, not including intimidation.”

Jones has a history of mental health conditions and has suffered from depression. He has a place to stay if he is released and is willing to report to police and not enter Cambridge Park, Mr Gaudiello said.

The police prosecutor opposed granting Jones bail and said there is a risk he will continue to commit further offences and endanger the complainant, the court heard.

Magistrate Susan McGowan said people need to be taking active steps to improve their mental health.

Magistrate Susan McGowan said she wanted people to take concrete steps to improve their mental health, even if they fail.

“Mental health is a sword and a shield. If you have mental health problems you need to do something about it, something has to be done,” she said.

“If he is found guilty of these offences, he is going to jail.”

Ms McGowan refused bail and said AVOs are in place for a reason.

The case has been adjourned to July 8 at Penrith Local Court.
