A man in his 30s has been flown to hospital in a critical condition following a large fire at a western Sydney chemical storage facility this morning.
Emergency services were called to the Cleanaway site on Christie St, St Marys about 6.30am following reports of the fire.
A man was found with serious burns to multiple areas of his body and was transported to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
One other worker was assessed on scene and is being monitored.
Twenty-six crews from Fire and Rescue NSW, hazardous material response experts and special operations team parademics and a rescue helicopter responded to the fire which caused thick smoke to billow out of the facility.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said there was “minor explosions” from aerosol cans being stored at the facility.
Firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to other buildings and are using thermal image cameras to clear concealed spaces at the facility.
Pictures show evacuated employees of the factory appearing shocked and concerned as emergency services worked to control the blaze.
A Cleanaway spokesman said the cause of the blaze was unknown with the safety of workers the current priority.
“There has been a fire this morning at our Christie Street St Marys site,” the spokesman said.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Cleanaway will work with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause. The health and safety of our employees is a foundation of Cleanaway.”
