A man has admitted to paying a corrective services staff member $600 to smuggle contraband into a western Sydney jail.
Brandon James Green, 28, of Deepwater on the Northern Tablelands of NSW, pleaded guilty to two counts of corruptly give/offer to give agent for benefit relating to two incidents at Geoffrey Pearce Correctional Centre in Berkshire Park in October 2019 and February 2020.
The court heard Green worked with a correctional services truck driver to smuggle illegal items into the jail.
The driver is also facing charges for his alleged participation in the plans, and will next appear at Windsor Local Court on September 24.
Green was serving a six-and-a-half year jail sentence when NSW correctional staff searched a kitchen area at the Berkshire Park jail.
According to police facts, police found 31 50g packs of tobacco, four vials of steroids, and 100 small white pills that police believe are also steroids.
Police found 6.4kg of protein powder, three bags of rice, and a pair of crotchless underwear in Green’s locker, as well as a handwritten note from the driver.
Green made admissions to owning the items found in his locker during an interview with corrective services.
Police then intercepted a phone call between Green and the driver on June 30, just a month after Green was released on parole.
During the call, police allege the two men spoke about their deals in jail and the possibility of selling cannabis.
Neither man is currently facing drug supply or drug possession charges.
Police then stopped the driver as he was driving into Geoffrey Pearce Correctional Centre in the early hours of July 8.
During an interview, police allege the driver said he had brought contraband to the prison, twice for Green.
He allegedly told police Green had twice paid him $300 to bring five pouches of tobacco.
Green was arrested in Glen Innes on July 23.
He originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, but his lawyer entered guilty pleas during a brief mention before Magistrate Alex Mijovich at Penrith Local Court on Thursday.
Green will be sentenced on August 6.
