Skating areas, obstacle-style play equipment, basketball courts and a relaxation space are among exciting potential upgrades at a park in Penrith’s most inactive suburb which has received a whopping $1.2 million boost.
Bennett Park in St Marys is set to draw upon funding from the Morrison government and Penrith City Council to encourage active lifestyles among St Marys residents who have recorded the highest level of inactivity in the LGA at 75.1 per cent.
The suburb also has the highest rate of overweight and obese children in the area.
“Through Council’s Sports and Recreation Strategy we identified the need for more spaces which support the community to live active lifestyles,” Penrith mayor Tricia Hitchen revealed.
The new mixed recreation space could include skate, scooter, and bike riding areas; climbing and obstacle-style equipment; basketball court; enhanced play equipment; seating, picnic tables, socialising areas and relaxation space.
“The Bennett Park upgrade will provide residents with access to modern, accessible facilities as they grow into the future, keeping locals active and boosting social connections,” Mrs Mcintosh said.
Mayor Hitchen invited the community to give their input.
“The community will be given the opportunity to contribute their ideas to the design with the primary aim of the project being to deliver a space that will provide inclusive facilities designed to be used by people of all ages, abilities and interests,” she said.
“Skate spaces, pump track elements, climbing and obstacle-style equipment, play equipment for a variety of ages, a multi-sport court, relaxation space, and socialising areas are among the design elements which the community will be able to comment on.”
