A western Sydney woman repeatedly stabbed her ex-partner with a key during an argument and told police her behaviour was “normal in her culture and not a big deal”.
Xiaolan Luo faced Burwood Local Court on Tuesday from custody after she was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm. She pleaded guilty to failing to appear.
Magistrate Christopher Halburd sentenced the 42-year-old to a one-year supervised community correction order, with a conviction recorded.
Court documents state police were called to Luo’s Auburn home about 2am on March 7 after a concerned resident reported “banging” noises coming from inside.
Luo and the victim had been living together after they separated, when they began arguing about money and throwing each other’s belongings around, documents continued.
Luo stabbed the victim with a key several times, which resulted in him receiving several cuts on his body, police facts state.
The victim told police he slapped her in self-defence and she began pinching him, causing further wounds.
The victim was naked and wrapped in a blanket when police arrived. Luo, who has Chinese heritage, told police the assault was “normal in her culture and not a big deal”, documents state.
At court Luo’s lawyer Stephen Jauncey said his client had “lost it” at her partner after they continued living together after breaking up.
Luo failed to attend court because she was feeling unwell, Jauncey said.
Mr Halburd said if she continued to be violent she would go to jail.
“To make this plain, this behaviour is not normal in our culture,” he said.
Police placed an AVO on Luo for the victim’s protection.
