WORK is set to begin on a new $22 million arts and library building in Granville, with the aim of bringing the community together in a state-of-the-art meeting place.
The new multipurpose facility will be located at the site of Granville Youth and Community Centre, which closed its doors on Friday to make way for the revamp.
Cumberland Mayor Greg Cummings said the new Granville Centre would address a shortfall of community spaces in the area.
“It will give local residents a place where they can meet, study, create and connect,” Cr Cummings said.
“The community programs and services that have operated out of Granville Community Centre have been relocated to nearby facilities, including Granville Town Hall and Granville Library.
“Over the Christmas holidays, residents will see fences go up and the landscape start to change around the site.
“Granville library will remain open throughout the rebuild process until it transitions across into the new facility. And Granville pool will also remain open throughout the build.”
The upgrade comes after council had successfully applied for $523,000 in federal funding to improve Granville.
“The Smart Cities grant will introduce smart technology in Granville to address traffic congestion and community safety; install smart lights to reduce energy consumption; and introduce sensors attached to bins to notify staff when bins are full,” Cr Cummings said.
The Granville Centre is expected to open in 2020.
