Wastewater spill forces public health warning at Subiaco Creek, Rydalmere
Residents have been warned to steer clear of a western Sydney creek after a hazardous wastewater spill from a Parramatta Council depot.
Residents have been warned to steer clear of a western Sydney creek after a hazardous wastewater spill from Parramatta Council’s Rydalmere depot.
A council spokeswoman said run-off from stockpiled material at its Victoria Rd operations centre had made its way into nearby Subiaco Creek after recent heavy rain.
“The run-off was fine sediment from the organic matter collected in road sweeping,” the spokeswoman said.
“Sydney Water have installed a filter boom across Subiaco Creek approximately 50m downstream of the system outlet.”
Council said it notified the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) early this morning and has since cleaned out tanks, pipes and filters at the depot.
“The stockpile of material has also been removed and disposed off-site,” the spokeswoman said.
“Sydney Water’s filtration boom remains in place; council has installed sediment control filters at the outlet of our pipe to control any remaining material in the pipe system; and a contractor has been engaged to remove areas of deposited sediment in the creek attributed to the discharge.”
The EPA said its officers inspected the site to assess the situation and was satisfied that council had implemented the necessary measures to prevent further run-off leaving the site.
