The Westmead Shopping Village is closer to morphing from a small set of neighbourhood shops into an $88 million multi-storey complex with a hotel, apartments, cafes and a supermarket.

Developers First Point Property plan to build a 14-storey retail and residential complex that will include a 97-room hotel, the reinstatement of the existing Westmead Tavern, as well as the supermarket and medical centre for the Railway Pde site.

Plans for eight restaurants and a 127-space, three-deck basement carpark are part of the project while development contributions feature public domain upgrades and a link from the train station to Hawkesbury Rd.

Plans were lodged with Parramatta Council in 2018 and have now progressed with the Sydney Central Planning Panel, which will determine its fate.

If approved, the complex will also feature a bridge connecting the four-storey building to the taller tower.

First Point Property said a landscaped outdoor area would provide “a tranquil oasis in the midst of a bustling precinct’’.

Its website spruiks the project as giving Westmead “an iconic building as the gateway to the Westmead Medical Precinct, with its location directly across the road from the Westmead railway station and a short walk to Westmead Hospital”.

The village shops were once bustling with the tavern, bakery, a drycleaner and supermarket but several shops including the newsagent and Commonwealth Bank at the neighbouring Westmead Arcade shut last year.

The State Government compulsorily acquired the arcade to make way for the $2.4 billion light rail.

Westmead Shopping Village is opposite the train station, which will be a Metro station when the line opens in 2030, and near the Parramatta Light Rail link along Hawkesbury Rd.
