Auburn: Courtyard by Marriott hotel to open in 2023

It’s best known for its Parramatta Rd stores and as a multicultural melting pot but a major international hospitality chain is establishing a hotel with more than 200 rooms in this western Sydney suburb.

The Marriott International hotel chain is expanding into the western suburbs and opening a 203-room hotel at Auburn.

The six-storey Courtyard by Marriott is due to open at 93 St Hilliers Rd in 2023 and will feature an outdoor swimming pool with sun deck, a fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms and a restaurant.

The Bistro restaurant will include an all-day casual restaurant with a lobby lounge and the 24/7 Market, a “grab and go cafe” with bakery items and pastries.

Corporate clients will have 370sq m of meeting and event space to “accommodate intimate meetings or larger conferences”.

Marriott International has also capitalising on its western Sydney market with plans to open Four Points by Sheraton at Blacktown, in 2024.

Richard Crawford, Marriott International’s senior director for hotel development in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, said the addition of the hotels showed how it was strategically expanding its footprint outside Australia’s metropolitan areas.

“Auburn and Blacktown are rapidly growing communities, with a range of demand drivers for visitor accommodation,’’ he said.

T1 Constructions will build the hotel, which Marriott also describes as being close distance to the Parramatta River, Sydney Olympic Park and the gateway to southwest sights, including the Royal National Park and the beaches of the South Coast.

But Western Sydney Business Chamber executive director David Borger was cautious about the project being too ambitious.

“I wish them well and it shows that confidence in the future of Sydney Olympic Park and the huge entertainment quarter that’s there but I would say at the moment there’s some really challenging times for Olympic Park and it needs help from the government to get back on its feet,’’ he said.

“When Olympic Park gets on its feet again with a new ANZ Stadium there will be an expanded tourist market.”

At nearby Parramatta, the Hilton’s plans for a five-star, 29-storey hotel at the corner of Macquarie and Marsden streets are advancing and a 239-room Holiday Inn Express is planned for Smith St.
