THE first of Sydney’s 24 new air-conditioned suburban trains are now in the testing phase.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited Auburn last Thursday to see the Waratah Series 2 trains up close ahead of their first passenger services late-2018.
The non-air-conditioned S-sets will be gradually decommissioned once the new trains are in operation.
“The good news is the areas where older trains are currently running, like Sydney’s southwest, will be given priority and receive the new Waratah trains first.
Features on the Waratah Series 2 trains include advanced temperature control air-conditioning, 90 CCTV cameras and improved interior lighting.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance said demand for trains was “going through the roof”.
“We need to act now to ensure we can continue to provide our customers with the services they need,” he said.
The trains will arrive progressively over the coming months with the entire fleet on the tracks by early 2019.
