Westmead’s $1 billion redevelopment is moving along without any hiccups as the site unveils a new 3D model which shows the size and scale of the future project.

Westmead Hospital’s $1 billion redevelopment is on schedule, with the executive director of the project hopeful it will be finished within two years.

“We have had, thankfully, really good weather, so no setbacks in construction,” Westmead redevelopment executive director Leena Singh said.

“The Westmead precinct is already one of the largest health, education, training and research precincts in Australia and it’s only getting bigger.

The $1 billion precinct will revolve around the innovation hub at the centre.

“More than $3 billion investment has already been committed by government, universities and the private sector to upgrade and expand the precinct over the next few years.”

On top of the central innovation hub, Ms Singh said they would be working closely with the State Government to include affordable housing close to the hospital. “From the workers’ perspective, we also want to ensure a component of affordable housing can be realised,” she said.

“People should be able to live, work and innovate on the site and our research suggests that over a long period of time we will see an additional 50,000 jobs and 50,000 students on the precinct, so this needs to be catered for.”

Ms Singh gave the update at the unveiling of a scale model of the future precinct.

“The new model is just a taste of what Westmead will look like in 10, 20 or even 40 years’ time,” Ms Singh said.

The model was unveiled on level 2 of the hospital. Pictured is Geoff Lee (Parramatta MP), Shantelle Morton (Reg nurse), Prof Chris Peck (University of Sydney), Elizabeth Wilson (Reg nurse), Mark Taylor (Seven Hills MP), Dr Michael Brydon (CE Children's hospital).

Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee called the model a tangible way for people to see the vision of the site.

The new model took more than 300 hours to build.

It has working lighting, custom-designed vehicles, including ambulances, and is made of more than 600 pieces.

The model is on level 2 of the E block of Westmead Hospital.

The redeveloped hospital will cover an area the size of 36 football fields.
