George Basha had not planned to write a sequel for his 2009 film The Combination.
The movie, based on his life growing up in western Sydney, lay complete for about six years until Basha noticed the world around him starting to change.
“The world has become, I think, less tolerant,” he said.
Issues around immigration, racism and religion were to Basha “lightbulbs that went off in my head”.
He channelled his thoughts into The Combination’s sequel, The Combination Redemption, which sees his character John Morkos struggle to rebuild his life in the aftermath of his brother’s death.
“His lost his way,” Basha said of John.
“He’s in a state of depression, he blames himself for the death of his brother, he’s lonely.
“The only time he has any sort of solace is when he’s in his element, the gym, amd he’s working away with his mate Wes.”
While John works to rebuild his life, tensions build as a new crime boss seeks to expand his empire and a radical group of white supremacists forms in the community.
The Combination Redemption was filmed around western Sydney including in Guildford, Parramatta, Merrylands, Wentworthville and Granville and has been made in a way that it can be watched as a standalone film for those who have not seen the original - although loyal fans have been eagerly awaiting the second instalment.
The Combination Redemption is due to be released in cinemas on February 7.
