A teenager stopped by police on a main street in Parramatta while allegedly carrying a backpack full of items which can manufacture a bomb has appeared in court.
Samuel James Wayne Griffiths, 18, from Telopea, was arrested last Wednesday morning after police stopped him and searched his bag during a patrol on Church St.
Gunpowder, a small amount of shotgun ammunition, 1L of methylated spirits, a wick and a lighter were allegedly discovered in his bag as well as stolen goods from a nearby mall.
Police allege the items contained in his bag were consistent with the manufacture of an improvised explosive device (IED) and he intended to harm a specific victim.
Griffiths has been in custody since police arrested him and he appeared via audiovisual link at Parramatta Local Court today.
His case was adjourned for another week and Magistrate Tim Keady told him he must enter a plea on his next appearance to the allegations against him.
