Police will allege in court that the man entered the unit while it was unoccupied prior to the incident and awaited her return.

It will be further alleged that the man sent threatening messages to the woman prior to her death.

The 33-year-old, who was studying to be a nurse, had recently broken up with her husband who had migrated with her from Brazil.

The couple had an 8-year-old daughter who was with her father, Marcelo Antunes de Ataide, at the time of the alleged murder.

Ms Pelegrini was found by police and emergency services officers with stab wounds inside the unit in Ingleby St, at 4.50pm on Monday.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital but died shortly after.

“She was a really good mother … she was the best mum and would do anything for her daughter,” he told the ABC.

“She is a nice person. Her mum passed away two years ago and it was really hard for her, she has been struggling.

“When she lost her mum, it was like half of her life.

“She was a tough woman, she think that when you say a good thing to her, she doesn’t believe it too much, but she has a good heart,” he said.

Mr Antunes de Ataide said his wife had complained a few times about a man who kept showing up at her doorstep and urged anyone in a similar position to call police.

“Please, if anyone suspects a woman is in trouble, please call police, please ask for help,” he said.

Landscaper Colin Larden, who maintains the gardens of the townhouse complex where Ms Pelegrini was killed, was blocked by police on Tuesday morning.

Mr Larden said he knew the woman “by sight” having worked in the “well-to-do” area for some time.

“I was really shocked to pull up and see this, it’s normally one of those really quiet complexes,” Mr Larden said. “I knew the family, not by name, but I saw them around and they were always friendly.”

Neighbour Nigel, who declined to give his surname, said the woman had lived with children and several other adults in a seemingly “normal family”.

“They seemed normal, nothing out of the ordinary,” he said. “We only met them once or twice but never heard screaming or anything much from them.”
