WITH less than 500 days to go until the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 competition gets under way, ICC World Twenty20 2020 Local Organising Committee CEO Nick Hockley has urged cricket fans in western Sydney to get behind the historic event.
From February 21 to March 8, 2020, Sydney Olympic Park will transform into a haven for women’s cricket as Spotless Stadium hosts four group stage matches of the first stand-alone women’s world Twenty20 tournament.
“Considering the growth of the WBBL and women’s cricket in general, we thought that rather than combine with the men, the women deserved their own competition and matches in prime time and under lights at a world-class venue,” Hockley said.
He added that sports fans in western Sydney are uniquely positioned to be able to help turn the event into something truly special.
“Sydney hosted the Cricket World Cup in 2015 and we’re hoping the World Twenty20 in 2020 will be even bigger,” Hockley said.
“We’re really excited to be able to kick off the celebration in western Sydney.

“We’ve seen how the community has really got behind the Sydney Thunder in the WBBL and ultimately what we’re hoping to do is show off western Sydney along with the really passionate fans.
“In terms of the growth of women’s sport, 2020 will be a breakthrough moment and something that will bring people together in support of what we hope is going to be a spectacular event.”
