Enticed by the promise of a day off school, a 10-year-old Hayley Silver-Holmes decided to have a crack at a Sydney west representative cricket trial.

Five years later, the now-15-year-old is the youngest player to sign a Sydney Sixers WBBL contract.

“It all started from there,” Hayley says.

“The next year I made the NSW PSSA team and then I went into the (women’s under-17) Brewer Shield competition with Parramatta District Cricket Club and it’s all been up from there.”

Hailing from Bowen Mountain at the foot of the Blue Mountains, Hayley’s representative cricket career has been nothing short of meteoric.

The genuine all-rounder has captained the NSW under-15 side and represented her country during the Australian under-19 side’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.

Hayley caught the interest of Sixers WBBL head coach Ben Sawyer during a tour of South Africa with the Australian under-19 squad.

It was on this tour that she caught the attention of WBBL Sydney Sixers Head Coach Ben Sawyer.

“Coming back from the tour I got a phone call from Ben,” Hayley said.

“He said ‘we’re offering you a contract. If you want to take it, it’s up for grabs’.

“Being such a young age, I didn’t think it was going to come this early. I couldn’t believe it to be honest, I was just so excited.”

In fact, the prospect of walking out onto the historic North Sydney Oval alongside her idol Ellyse Perry is something Hayley is still struggling to wrap her head around.

“I just assume there’s going to be lots of cheering,” she said.

“Walking out there and playing for the Sixers is going to be such an honour.”
