It’s taken around 160 years but finally Cricket NSW is getting a home of its own – and it’s pretty spectacular.
The first sod was turned on Wednesday in the stage one construction of the new $50 million Cricket NSW centre of excellence which will be home to the NSW Breakers, the NSW Blues, Sydney Thunder BBL and WBBL squads as well as the headquarters for officials and staff.
But the centre will also be available to the community with an estimated 35,000 club and community players using the facilities annually.
It is hoped stage one construction of the new cricket centre will be completed by March 2022 and will help ensure NSW Cricket continues to produce some of the best players in the world.
Both elite and emerging athletes, from Test players to rising stars, will use the state of the art facilities based at Wilson Park, Silverwater, in Sydney Olympic Park.
The centre will host academies and development squads and will include a junior and senior oval, 50 outdoor turf practice nets, a 15 lane indoor facility, elite and community change rooms, a public cafe and a full gymnasium, rehabilitation and recovery centre.
A sod turning on Wednesday marked the official launch for the future home of NSW Cricket.
“This soon to be world-class facility will allow boys and girls to train alongside their NSW cricket heroes, inspiring the next generation of exciting young players,” Cricket NSW boss Lee Germon said.
