A Corrective Services NSW officer is being charged with corruption offences following a seven-month long investigation by a specialty task force.
Police arrested the 29-year-old Auburn man at 8am today at Silverwater Correctional Complex, where it was his day-to-day job to govern prison inmates as a correctional officer.
Detective Inspector Robert Hollows said the man — who had access to a State Government database used to manage offenders — allegedly conducted himself in “a manner that was corrupt and criminal”, but he declined to elaborate further on the allegations.
“In July 2019, detectives from the corrective services investigations unit established Strike Force Sciarra to investigate allegations of corrupt activities at a facility in Silverwater,” Det Insp Hollows said.
“The allegation is this particular person is an officer and he used his position as an officer to conduct corrupt and criminal activities in that set up.”
Police conducted searches of the man’s Auburn home and Audi RS3 car after his arrest. They found three mobile phones, including a secure Cipher smartphone that protects against phone call interception, tracking, deep packet inspection and communication data mining.
The man is currently being interviewed at Auburn Police station and charges are expected to be laid later today, Det Insp Hollows said.
“We … pretty much have a zero tolerance attitude towards this type of behaviour,” he said.
“Potentially, there will be further investigations and that’s going to depend on today and what happens during the interview.”
