Police charge woman allegedly driving on ice with newborn in Riverina

A woman allegedly drug-driving with a newborn infant in the car, a trail biker allegedly more than four times the legal limit and an alleged drunk driver who crashed through a paddock fence are among those busted by police this holiday period.

A woman has been charged with allegedly driving affected by ice with a 25-day-old baby in the car in the state’s Riverina region.

The 31-year-old woman was prohibited from driving for 24 hours after allegedly testing positive to methylamphetamine in a roadside drug test on Whitton St, Narrandera at 4.40pm on Boxing Day.

She was arrested and charged with driving with an illegal drug in her system and will face court at a later date.

NSW Police have now issued more than 6000 speeding infringements and more than 350 drink driving charges in the first week of their annual Christmas and New Year road policing campaign.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Michael Corboy, said he hoped to see an improvement in driver behaviour.

“We’ve got unlicensed and disqualified drivers, unsupervised learner drivers and drug and alcohol-affected motorists getting behind the wheel and putting lives in danger,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

“Officers are also seeing people take risks with young children in the car, including not having infants properly restrained, and people driving at dangerous speeds, well over the limit.”

At 11.05am on Boxing Day a 60-year-old man driving a Toyota Avalon was stopped for a random breath test on Fowler Rd in Merrylands before he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.162.

He was issued a field court attendance notice for high range drink driving and will face Parramatta Local Court on January 21 next year.

At 3.45pm a 32-year-old man driving a Ford Falcon was stopped at Darby Falls Rd in Cowra when police allegedly saw him travelling at excessive speed in a 100km/h zone.

Police found the car in a nearby paddock after leaving the road and crashing through a fence.

The driver was arrested and taken to Cowra police station, where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.180.

He was charged with high range drink driving and will face Cowra Local Court on January 22 next year.

A 21-year-old man was also issued a field court attendance notice to face Parramatta Local Court on January 23 next year after police allegedly found an 11-month-old incorrectly restrained in the back of his Toyota Celica in South Wentworthville.

At 4.15pm a 22-year-old man was seen riding an unregistered trail bike in a club carpark on Beach Rd in Batesman Bay before a breath test allegedly returned a result of 0.210.

He was charged with driving while disqualified, high range drink driving and using an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle on a road and will face Batemans Bay Local Court on February 17 next year.

At 10.30pm a 39-year-old male driver allegedly stopped short of a random breath test site on Five Islands Rd in Cringila and reversed away at speed.

Police found the man in a nearby carpark and checks revealed he was disqualified from driving until 2024.

He will face court next year after he was charged with driving disqualified and dangerous driving.

A 20 year-old man was also issued an infringement notice after he was allegedly observed driving his Ford Fiesta up to 125km/h in a 70km/h zone on James Ruse Dr in Rosehill.

At last count police had issued 6285 speed infringements, conducted 263,805 breath tests, laid 358 drink driving charges, attended 483 major crashes and six fatalities.
