Work has started on a $12 million five-storey unit block at Pendle Hill where another medical centre is proposed for a suburb already brimming with them.

A total of 32 apartments, three commercial spaces and a double-level basement carpark with 72 spaces are planned for 2-4 Gilba Rd where Designcorp Architects will build on the 1986sq m site.

The development, which was approved in 2018, will require the demolition of two fibro homes, and is within a block from two medical centres at Pendle Way, and another one at nearby Civic Ave.

Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou welcomed more medical centres in the area.

“Regardless of whether it’s Pendle Hill or not, I’ve always been an advocate for good development,’’ he said.

“In regards to medical centres, council cannot control private business but I welcome medical centres, they’re a necessity, and if anything, take stress away from our emergency departments.’’

The unit block is a diminutive development compared with the 1200-apartment complex slated for the Bonds site at nearby Dunmore St where a full-line supermarket is also planned.

Its neighbour, Fresh Hope, has plans to redevelop Pendle Hill Retirement Village, seeing it soar from 190 to almost units if the State Government approves plans.

At Civic Ave, a 66-apartment complex, The Huntley, flanking the train line is forging ahead.

The six storey Dyldam block is on the former site of The Pendle Sports Club.

Pendle Hill is at the epicentre of Cumberland Council’s population growth.

It is in the fastest growing ward of the council, where other suburbs including Wentworthville, Mays Hill, Toongabbie, Westmead and parts of Greystanes are expected to grow 54 per with 20,000 people are expected to move there in the next 20 years.

The council has written to Transport for NSW to investigate building a multi-level, 130-space carpark next to Civic Park, over the existing lot.

However, the plans were labelled unacceptable by Labor councillor Lisa Lake, who said the carpark would be an eyesore so close to the “village green’’ of Civic Park.
