A diverse group of Parramatta cafe owners, personal trainers, hairdressers, travel agents and police officers have put on their dancing shoes to raise money for the Cancer Council NSW.

The Stars of Parramatta will see 12 locals paired off with dance professionals before putting their newly learned skills on display at a gala for more than 250 people at Parramatta RSL on July 27.

The stars have been paired with teachers from Arthur Murray Dance Studios, Move with Me Dance Studios, Powerhouse Dance Factory and Nartan Institute of Performing Arts to learn their new moves.

Dance teacher Ryan Herbert and Castle Hill RSL group HR manager Rachel Ferris have joined in the Stars of Parramatta.

Leading Senior Constable Rebecca Monin from the Parramatta Police Area Command will be swapping her police boots for foxtrot shoes on the night.

“This will be the first time performing in front of an audience and I’m a little nervous about it,” she said.

Despite her initial nerves, Constable Monin was keen to join The Stars of Parramatta to help raise as “much money as possible for the Cancer Council”.

“I’ve learnt that life is far too short and so sometimes, we all need to take ourselves out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves,” she said.

“Dancing on stage is nothing compared to what our friends and families have endured, fighting through the toughest fight of their life,” she said.

Constable Monin and her fellow stars will compete for three awards on the night; judge’s choice, people’s choice and highest fundraiser.

Constable Monin has already raised more than $2600 for the Cancer Council and will hold a family fun day to add to that tally at Inflatable World in North St Marys on July 13.

Entry will cost $15 for three hours of inflatable fun and there will be a raffle, door prizes, a barbecue and treats for sale.

Hannah Moore from the Cancer Council said the Parramatta event raised $76,000 in its inaugural year in 2018 and the plan was to raise $100,000 this year for research, prevention, and information and support services in greater western Sydney.

“The aim is to have people from all areas of the community participate, demonstrating how we can all contribute and make a difference,” she said.

Tickets to the gala dinner cost $130.
