Parramatta: Fire at Lansdowne St unit after electric stove used

A blaze destroyed a Parramatta apartment after an electric stove was used as a makeshift heater, prompting authorities to issue fresh fire warnings for households. See the damage it inflicted.

Fire fatality

A fire broke out in a Lansdowne St, Parramatta unit, on Wednesday morning after an electric stove residents were using as a makeshift heater ignited a blanket.

Emergency services were called to the unit just before 11.45am where they found smoke pouring from the second-storey home after the fire took hold inside a bedroom.

The residents and their neighbours made it out safely.

Firefighters doused the flames and contained the damage to the unit where the fire started.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated two elderly residents for minor smoke inhalation and transported them to hospital.

Fire and Rescue NSW understands the occupants had been running portable electric hotplates to try to keep themselves warm. The radiant heat ignited a blanket which they had draped over a nearby table.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it was unclear whether the smoke alarm in the unit was working but the incident was a timely reminder to all owners and landlords that homes must be fitted with a working smoke alarm that is less than 10 years old and test them regularly.

“I would urge the community to be mindful of what equipment they are using to try to heat their home to minimise the risk of fire,” Supt Dewberry said.

Several fires have broken out across the community since winter, including in July when a faulty or overloaded powerboard sparked the blaze that killed Raunak Chaudhary when the 27 year old was in the third-storey, one-bedroom unit at Campbell St, Parramatta.

At Merrylands, a family of six suffered carbon monoxide poisoning after using a charcoal barbecue inside their home.
