GREATER Parramatta will be the heart of infrastructure and innovation in the vision for Sydney’s future — with a diverse health and education precinct earmarked for Westmead.
The vision comes after the release of the Greater Sydney Commission’s finalised district plan for a central city.
The plan highlights the need to expand the region’s powerhouse economy through “unprecedented city-scale infrastructure” such as schools, community services and sporting facilities, while also establishing new transport links.
“The health and education and advanced manufacturing sectors are the biggest contributors to economic growth and jobs creation in the district,” the report said.
“Westmead has the largest health and education precinct in Greater Sydney with hospitals, universities, research institutions and allied health services.”
Greater Sydney commissioner Lucy Turnbull said a wide range of knowledge-based jobs, high-tech manufacturing and world-class health and education facilities would be the future of Parramatta.
“We’re focused on growing a diversity of jobs from health and education at Westmead, to public administration and professional services in Parramatta, to technologically advanced jobs in Camellia-Rydalmere-Silverwater that service the city’s needs, to specialised services and industries in Olympic Park around a new retail centre,” Mrs Turnbull told the Advertiser.
PLANS FOR NORWEST TO PARRAMATTA TRANSPORT LINK
Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson said with the right investment and infrastructure, Westmead had “huge potential to be developed as a 21st century innovation precinct for Greater Sydney of international significance”.
According to the finalised plans, radial transport networks will link Parramatta CBD with the Westmead education and health precinct and there was potential for “radial mass transit services” that would link Greater Parramatta to Norwest, Epping and Bankstown.
“We can imagine a future where the great majority of Sydneysiders will be able to reach Greater Parramatta in 30 minutes,” Mrs Turnbull said.
“This will bring a whole new workforce into Parramatta, for new jobs, as well as a mass of students to the growing number of tertiary educational opportunities.”
The commission’s Central City plan stretches across suburbs such as Rhodes, to Epping, Castle Hill to Marsden Park, and predicts major population growth to about 1,521,500 people by 2036.
