Claire Georgey: Mohammad Saleh charged after fatal highway crash

A man is facing a string of charges after a horrific crash in Sydney’s west that claimed the life of a young woman, who has been remembered as a “beautiful ray of light”.

A 32-year-old man has been charged after a horrific crash on the Cumberland Highway, Merrylands West, claimed Claire Georgey’s life a week later.

Mohammad Saleh, of Guildford, was driving when his Nissan Skyline and Miss Georgey’s Subaru Forrester collided on the intersection of the Cumberland Highway and Bruce St on September 7 about 10.30pm.

Miss Georgey — a former Merrylands High School student — fought for her life in hospital for a week but died on September 14.

Saleh and his passenger, a 32-year-old man, were taken to Westmead Hospital suffering internal injuries.

The tight-knit community led tributes for Miss Georgey remembering her as a “beautiful ray of light”.

“Why this crazy world had to lose a beautiful ray of light,’’ one friend posted. “Gone too soon precious Angel Claire. Love you forever Claire such a bright, beaming light.’’

Another said: “Life is so cruel at times but memories and love will never leave you! May your precious girl Claire be resting and smiling with the angels!’’

Cumberland police and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit started an investigation into the crash.

Saleh was discharged from hospital on Wednesday and attended Parramatta police station where he was arrested and charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – speeding more than 45 over limit, aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – more than 45 km/h over limit, dangerous driving occasioning death – drive speed dangerous, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive speed dangerous, organise, promote race between vehicle, negligent driving (occasioning death), and negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm).

He appeared at Parramatta Local Court today where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Friday.
