A pedestrian is dead and a teen schoolgirl is in hospital after two separate hit and runs in Sydney’s west and southwest in less than 24 hours.

A 46-year-old man died after being struck by a sedan in Leumeah on Tuesday, following the SUV hit and run of a 16-year-old girl on Monday night.

The teenage girl remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Police have issued a public appeal for assistance after the Merrylands incident, and the 77-year-old female driver involved in the Leumeah fatality is assisting police with their inquiries after she allegedly fled the scene and was found at a sports field nearby.

The 16-year-old girl was struck at the intersection of Denmark and St Ann streets about 6pm on Monday.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the girl at the scene before she was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.

Police said the SUV driver failed to stop and left the scene.

Cumberland police have began an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

Police would like to speak with the driver of a black SUV who they believe might assist with their inquiries.

At about 10am on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports of a crash at Junction Rd, Leumeah and arrived on scene.

Officers from the Campelltown City Police Area Command were told a 46-year-old male pedestrian had been hit by a Mitsubishi sedan as he exited another vehicle.

It is alleged the sedan had left the area shortly after hitting the man, who was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital shortly after where he later died.

Police have since established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.

Officers located the sedan at a nearby sports centre using Polair, and arrested the 77-year-old female driver.

She was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Charges have not been laid at this stage.

Anyone with dashcam footage or more information about either crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
