FORGET drive-through, residents of a new apartment building in Parramatta will be able to take a quick elevator ride to fast food.

McDonald’s Parramatta restaurant, on the corner of Victoria Rd and Church St, has entered into an agreement with property group Stockland to launch the restaurant’s first apartment project.

The project would see up to 350 units created above a two-storey McDonald’s with views over Prince Alfred Square and opposite a future Parramatta light rail stop.

The development would include more than 1500sq m of retail and services space with a revamped McDonald’s that includes two levels of seating, a McCafe, a carpark, drive-through and play equipment.

McDonald’s development director Josh Bannister said the joint project gave the restaurant chain a chance to be part of the design from the beginning.

“This is one of the first mixed use developments where McDonald’s has been integral to the design from the outset, allowing us to create a truly innovative and modern experience that we’re confident our customers will love.”

A building on the site has been vacant since the mid-1990s and negotiations for its development have been ongoing since 2013. In 2015 McDonald’s withdrew a development application for 76 apartments on the site after the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) ruled the development represented a “lost opportunity” for the gateway to Parramatta’s CBD.

The revised application has yet to be lodged with the council, with Stockland and McDonald’s stating they were in the early stages of planning.

The building dates back to 1910 and was originally used as a bakery and butcher’s shop.
