Granville residents have expressed their increasing concern about crime and safety in the area, with particular problems identified in the town centre and around the train station.
The fears have prompted the council to ask police to help conduct a safety audit of the area.
Cumberland councillors Joe Rahme and Steve Christou said they had been approached by residents frustrated by increasing levels of anti-social behaviour and the law enforcement’s ability to respond to their concerns.
“The crimes we are most concerned with are anti social behaviour around Granville and Clyde stations and other hot spots,” Liberal Cr Rahme said.
“Also loitering, prostitution, burglary, car theft and vandalism.
“We are being told (prostitution) is happening in the early hours of the morning. “Crime will always be a factor in our society.”
The area from Clyde St, Seventh St, through the town centre and ending at New Glasgow Park will be the target for an expansive crime safety audit.
Granville police station is situated a few metres from the town centre, but Labor Cr Christou said this had not deterred crime.
“There is a need for a lot more resources to be poured into both Granville and Merrylands police stations to enable them to function to their full potential,” Cr Christou said.
The audit, which is likely to be conducted in June, will also include resident feedback, particularly those that live within the immediate area.
Granville police inspector Trent King said: “Cumberland police welcome any community safety audit which would assist in identifying any safety issues, which we maybe able to assist with.
“Police will be involved in the audit at the request of council offering advice and assistance.”
