Matthew Ibrahim, M4 Auburn: Drunk driver refused breath test after speeding

A ‘aggressive and uncooperative’ drunk driver refused to complete a breath test three times while demanding the test operator at Granville Police Station be screened for COVID-19 first.

A drunk driver who refused a breath test three times because he demanded the operator be screened for COVID-19 has fronted court.

Matthew Abanoub Ibrahim, 29, was arrested after speeding while drunk on the M4 at Auburn just after 1am on Saturday, July 4.

The Merrylands West man appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday when his lawyer entered a guilty plea on his behalf for exceeding the speed over 45km/h, refusing breath analysis, using an unregistered vehicle and using an uninsured vehicle.

Police facts tendered to the court state Ibrahim submitted a positive breath analysis when police stopped his westbound Ford Ranger ute after it was clocked doing 143km/h in a 90km/h zone but refused a subsequent test at Granville police station when “he would only count

into a device”.

After the third request police facts stated he refused, “stating he would only do so after seeing the breath analysis operator undergo a test for COVID”.

Police said Ibrahim, who is self employed, was yelling at police and banging the door irrationally at Granville police station.

“The accused refused to answer any questions and was constantly talking over police and not listening to any questions or other instructions,” the facts stated.

“During the incident police observed the accused to be aggressive, uncooperative, he was constantly talking and refused to listen to any instructions given to him.

“He was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and bloodshot, his speech was slurred, he continuously made claims that he had been assaulted by police after refusing the breath analysis.”

Bail was continued and the matter will return to the court on August 11.
