An inmate in a western Sydney prison has been charged and forced into segregation — after the alleged violent assault of a correctional officer which resulted in hospitalisation.
On February 28, a Corrective Services officer was allegedly set on by an inmate inside the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre, Silverwater at around 1.30pm, according to Corrective Services NSW.
“The officer was taken to hospital for assessment, before being discharged,” a spokeswoman said. “We take a zero tolerance approach to violence in prisons and every precaution is taken to ensure the safety and security of our staff.
“We have a number of supports in place to assist staff through recovery and place a high value on staff wellbeing.”
The spokeswoman said the inmate was placed into segregation, and NSW Police were notified.
A NSW Police spokeswoman told NewsLocal Auburn Police Area Command detectives conducted an investigation into the assault of a 49-year-old man at a Silverwater correctional facility on Tuesday.
Following inquiries, 36-year-old Hussein Khamiss was charged on Thursday with assault law enforcement officer (not police) inflict actual bodily harm, the spokeswoman said.
“The man was remanded in custody to appear at Burwood Local Court.”
Khamiss appeared via AVL, where he was bail refused on Thursday afternoon.
