Guildford Public School students have shown they have a knack for fighting campaigns after successfully lobbying Cumberland Council for a pedestrian crossing at Military Rd.
A traffic analysis and community consultation was undertaken after Year 6 students approached the council, which will be marked near the corner of Trenton Rd.
Mayor Steve Christou said the crossing ensured children who crossed from the other side of the railway were safe.
“Students have been terrific advocates for this crossing, and I’m glad that council is in a
position to make this happen,” he said.
“We want to improve safety for families, particularly for little ones in Cumberland.
“Military Rd can be extremely busy and parents need to be able to drop their kids off
and know they can make their way safely into school if they need to cross the street.’’
He urged motorists to always give way to pedestrians crossing the road even if there is no marked pedestrian crossing.
“Seniors or pedestrians with a disability may take a longer time to cross the road, so
please be patient if you’re driving and don’t assume someone crossing the road has
seen you,’’ he said.
“If you’re a pedestrian, please look for cars coming from all possible directions, before
crossing and look for bicycles and motorcycles as well as cars.”
The crossing will be installed shortly and will be used by about 400 students.
