Court papers reveal Bhim Kumar Tamang, 29, had only been in Australia for nine months on a spousal visa and was driving on a Nepalese licence on July 26 when he collided with 21-year-old Noura Said’s Toyota Corolla when he turned right from Woodville Rd on to Oxford St.
He failed to give way to Ms Said and slammed into her driver’s door, causing it to mount a kerb at Woodville Rd and collide with a traffic light pole on July 26 at 10.30pm.
The incident left the victim trapped behind the wheel until firefighters, paramedics and police freed her. She wastaken to Westmead Hospital suffering a sore neck and back.
But instead of stopping to assist Ms Said, Tamang escaped to the Merrylands apartment he shares with his wife on Woodville Rd.
After the guilt got to him an hour later, Tamang called Merrylands police.
Police facts tendered to the court said when Tamang was asked whey he failed to help the woman he said he “was nervous and afraid’’.
“When asked what made him contact police to make admissions he said “I was suffering, I felt it was the right thing to do.’’
He was charged with not giving way at traffic lights to oncoming vehicle (right turn), failing to stop and assist after impact cause injury and not giving particulars to the other driver.
Court papers state that Tamang, who works full time at Yagoona, regretted his actions.
“While his actions in leaving the scene of this collision are highly questionable, the accused has shown remorse by contacting police himself and making full admissions of guilt.’’
Tamang, who pleaded guilty to the offences, did not appear at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
He was convicted, fined a total of $3000. He is disqualified from driving for 12 months.
