HE doesn’t know it yet but Callum Falconer’s birth at Westmead Hospital is a watershed moment in more ways than one.
Not only was he the first baby born at Westmead Hospital on its 40th birthday on Saturday, he will be raised by same-sex couple Fiona and Cassie Falconer.
The Guildford couple got married in June, six months after Australia legalised same-sex marriage.
Fiona, 41, gave birth after going through IVF at Westmead Hospital and praised the treatment she received during the pregnancy.
“I think it’s a very multicultural area there now and the fact we were given the acceptance and treatment, we were happy,” she said.
“We went with Westmead because of the IVF program and our professor was at Westmead and we also liked the fact it had everything there.”
Callum was born at 1.14am, weighing 3.4kg and measuring 51cm.

Fiona said while she and Cassie, 30, had not encountered discrimination as a gay couple during the pregnancy, they faced challenges living in Guildford.
“We definitely don’t fit in and we’re actually looking at moving from this area,” she said. “Where we are in our street, we’ve got really good neighbours but it’s not a place you walk hand-in-hand in the street pushing your baby.”
Last year, 5688 babies were born at Westmead Hospital.
