A mother who visited Pemulwuy Children’s Centre twice in the past two weeks has tested positive to coronavirus, potentially infecting scores of families.

Cumberland Council has temporarily closed the Newport St centre, where the parent visited while she had COVID-19.

A council spokeswoman said the centre is normally a 65-place facility but there were 49 children each day last week and about 30 children each day this week.

The council’s general manager Hamish McNulty advised families with children at the centre to monitor for symptoms.

“Council is carrying out intensive professional cleaning of the centre to ensure it is

safe for children and our staff,’’ he said.

“The centre will remain closed until this is complete.

“We appreciate the patience and support of families during this difficult and uncertain

period and will do everything we can to ensure their safety.”

NSW Health figures updated from March 26 at 8pm show there are 25 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Cumberland and 27 in Parramatta.

Across NSW, there are 1617 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Cumberland Council’s childcare centres remain open despite other services such as libraries, workshops and aquatic centres closing.

Festivals including Youth Week, the Ramadan Street Festival, Fun 4 Kids, Naidoc Event and Anzac Day events have been cancelled.

No bookings will be accepted for the Holroyd Centre, Central Gardens, Holroyd Gardens or Auburn Botanic Gardens.
