The Auburn Centre for Community has closed for the next 48 hours after a visitor who attended on Saturday, August 29, tested positive to coronavirus.

Cumberland Council general manager Hamish McNulty said the visitor attended the centre between 5pm and 7pm.

Western Sydney Health has advised the council, which runs the centre, that the visitor was not considered to be a “close contact” for other visitors and staff at the Macquarie Rd site.

Despite NSW Health advising the council that the centre was not required to close, it has elected to close as a precautionary measure and will reopen on Friday, September 4.

According to NSW Health, a close contact is “someone who has been near enough

to a person with COVID-19 while they were infectious that there is a reasonable

chance they will have become infected with COVID-19.”

Mr McNulty said the council carried out intensive professional cleaning of the centre to ensure its safety.

All visitors who attended the centre since Saturday have been advised that they

should monitor themselves for symptoms and get tested.

“We appreciate the patience and support of residents during this difficult time and we

will do everything we can to ensure their safety, working in partnership with health

professionals,’’ Mr McNulty said.

Seventeen new cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, and one previous case was excluded following further investigation.

This brings the total number of cases in NSW to 3890.

NSW Health is treating 75 COVID-19 cases, including five in intensive care and three who are ventilated.

If you visited Stockland Merrylands on August 29, you are considered a casual contact and monitor for symptoms.

Eighty-seven per cent of cases being treated by NSW Health are in non-acute, out-of-hospital care.
