Carlingford Public School is adding a $15.2 million three-storey building to help manage the fast growing student population.
The 20 classrooms will mean an extra 690 students will be able to be enrolled at the school.
This school year saw an extra 116 new students, pushing its enrolments to 601.
The 1535sq m building will rise where the playground, tennis courts and 13 demountables now stand.
The project will also include a hall, covered outdoor learning area, and upgrades to the staff and administration area.
Education Minister Rob Stokes said the development would bring the school into the future.
“This project will ensure students and staff have the best possible resources available to them to succeed in the 21st century,” he said.
The first building at the school was constructed in 1886. The 1887 building was demolished in the late 1970s.
The school is conducting a survey with parents and carers about the upgrade; including comment on what other facilities they would like to see improved and suggestions on future changes.
“We obviously would like to involve the students, staff and community in this exciting project,” school principal Neil Hinton said.
“Information booths will be set up at certain times at Carlingford Court, allowing the community to access information about the project and also provide feedback.”
Construction is set to begin in early 2018 with the upgrade likely to finish in late 2020.
