Residents of Parramatta and Cumberland are no strangers to work. The latest Census data shows workers in the two local government areas are putting in a staggering 871,173 hours of overtime each week.
More than 90,000 people reported working more than the standard 39-hour work week, individually clocking 468 hours of overtime or 19.5 extra work days in the year.
Parramatta and Cumberland have more than 220,000 people employed over the age of 15, which is almost 50 per cent of the population.
Most people are working in the health sector, which showed the largest growth in the past five years.
Manufacturing jobs are the second biggest employer in the region, with 22,931 people heading to work in factories, including the 1667 manufacturing businesses registered in both LGAs.
Census program manager Bindi Kindermann said the data showed some notable trends in different jobs.
“The Census is a great way to identify changes in our landscape,” Ms Kindermann said. “Comparing data from 2016 to that from 2011, we can see in the service sector there was a 27 per cent increase in fitness instructors, a 25 per cent rise in the number of beauty therapists and a 23 per cent increase in bar attendants and baristas.”
While those who live in the area are mostly working in health or manufacturing, construction is the number one business enterprise, with 9532 registered construction businesses in the Cumberland and Parramatta region.
Cumberland is starting to see an upturn in the number of registered businesses, after the industry took a serious blow in 2014 when 16,836 businesses closed in the two years from 2012 to 2014.
Now the tide is turning on the area with an additional 2163 businesses created in the last financial year.
Parramatta continues to grow in construction with an additional 635 construction businesses created from 3189 in 2012 to 3824 at the time of the latest Census.
While those jobs are bringing in the highest number of people, they are also seeing the most overtime; manufacturing businesses recorded 3488 people working in excess of 49 hours a week, with health care logging 2695 workers putting in the same amount of extra time.
Students have not been spared the longer hours with 332 full-time students and 1062 part-time students working more than 40 hours a week.
