A SMILING face on a rock and an inspirational quote has lifted hundreds of Sydney residents.

The simple gesture was the idea of two Ermington brothers as their way of saying thanks.

After a lifetime of visiting The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for treatment, Braveyn Tse, 12, held his first fundraiser along with his brother Branden, 11.

Born with a growth deformity in his foot that will require leg-lengthening surgery in the not-too-distant-future, the youngster and Branden raised $428 for the hospital.

The brothers hand painted rocks with smiling faces and glued eyes on them before packaging them with inspirational quotes and words of affirmation, selling them to the local community for $1.

They sold more than 150 Brave Happy Rocks by door knocking their Ermington neighbourhood and approaching commuters at West Ryde station.

Mum Gloria said the boys wanted to help others.

“Braveyn wants to inspire other children to go out there, contribute and make a difference,” she said.

“His journey has sparked something inside him. He now wants to do more and find a way to help pay for children who can’t afford surgeries like what Braveyn will need.”

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s community relations and marketing director Gilly Paxton said it was wonderful to see children like Braveyn and Branden wanting to give back.

“The effort they went to is inspiring and we are so grateful for their donation.”
