Backstreet Boys Aussie doubles redo ‘I want it that way’ to ‘wash up, put that away’

NOT only are the Backstreet Boys back, but their doppelgangers have made a revival in Sydney’s north. They paid tribute to the boy band, reworking the lyrics to their top tune I want it that way.

NOT only are the Backstreet Boys back, but their doppelgangers have made a revival in Sydney’s north.

The C3 Church Carlingford members who form the boy band’s double, got together for Mother’s Day to pay tribute to their mums.

With the help of creative director Shelley Witt and cameraman Rob Quee, the idea came to life.

Instead of “I want it that way” the lyrics were altered to “wash up, put that away”.

“You are my mother, you’re like no other,” the altered lyrics continue.

“Your words — in my head. The ones — that I dread. The chores — why can’t they wait? But you want it that way.”

The video came about when creative director Shelley Witt was hunting around for something special and fun for Mother’s Day. But there was nothing.

She rewrote the song lyrics from the Backstreet Boys tune and ran it by the church’s planning team.

“We had a conversation about copyright and agreed that it was adequately original and would stand up to a challenge under the parody or satire defence,” pastoral administrator Justin Ware said.

“Then we gathered a group of our young adults and explained who the Backstreet Boys were … to three of them anyway.”

After a quick watch of the video clip they were planning their wardrobe and thinking about where the video could be shot.

Once the audio was recorded in true amateur-style, one of the singers started working on choreography.

Can you tell if these are the real Backstreet Boys or their Carlingford double?

“Most of the rehearsals involved pouting at a mirror in an attempt to imitate the legendary boy band style of the original artists,” Mr Ware said.

Then there was the issue with how they’d do their hair.

“The 90s look was hard to achieve initially but with consultation from some Gen X blokes on how to achieve the perfect “middle hair part”, they pulled it off well.”

The video was shot in the kitchen of one of the mum’s from church and in the bedroom of northern district boy band member Jonathan Potter.

SING ALONG WITH THE NEW LYRICS

Wash up, put that away (formerly known as I want it that way)

Yeah-eh-heah

Verse 1

You are — my mother

You’re like — no other

(But) Five words — they haunt me:

Wash up, put that away

Verse 2

You have — a good heart

But one thing — keeps us apart

I tune out — When you say

Wash up, put that away

Chorus

Tell me why

The rubbish I forgot to take

Tell me why

My bed it seems I can’t make

Tell me why

I never want to hear you say

Wash up, put that away

Verse 3

Your words — in my head

The ones — that I dread

The chores — why can’t they wait?

But you want it that way

Chorus

Tell me why

The rubbish I forgot to take

Tell me why

My bed it seems I can’t make

Tell me why

I never want to hear you say

Wash up, put that away

Bridge

Now you can see that I’m growing up

From the boy I used to be -Yeah

No matter the resistance

I want you to know

That deep down inside of me

Verse/pre-chorus

You are — my mother

You’re like — no other

You are (you are, you are, you are)

Don’t want to hear you say …

Chorus

Tell me why

The rubbish I forgot to take

Tell me why

My bed it seems I can’t make

Tell me why

I never want to hear you say

Wash up, put that away

End Chorus

Tell me why

I seem to like to disagree

Tell me why

(It’s) hard work — but you put up with me

Tell me why
