Most that knew Alex Dubov would’ve seen a typical 22-year-old, living with his religious family in the outer suburbs, studying at Tafe and enjoying hanging out with his friends.
The man’s double life was dramatically uncovered when, in March last year, his home was raided and he was arrested and charged as the upline supplier of a drug supply syndicate selling drugs to ravers at music events across Sydney.
There is no suggestion any of his family knew about his drugs business.
Dubov, dressed in a sharp black suit with a tight man bun, was joined by about 15 supporters in late April when he faced Judge Gina O’Rourke SC to learn his fate for his criminal role.
Dealers Alex Rainbow, Madyson Brooks and Lucy Kelly have all been sentenced for their role in the drug dealing syndicate which Dubov supplied.
The agreed facts reveal the Cabramatta man, now 24, handed over 641g of MDMA to the key player in a drug supply syndicate who on-sold the product to an undercover police officer.
Police officers had the upline supplier under surveillance and watched on as Dubov would drive a Toyota Camry to meet members of the supply syndicate. On some occasions, CCTV captured the 24-year-old hopping into cars being driven by the dealers.
The agreed facts reveal how the undercover police officer was told by members by the alleged leader of the drug ring how the MDMA he could provide was all imported and of high purity.
Following Dubov’s arrest police suspicions were triggered by a jailhouse phone call with his girlfriend, who spilled “I think they still have to find something else … in Dedda’s (Russian term for grandfather) shed”, the agreed facts stated.
Dubov said it was “all good” and he had spoken to his dad, but days later police officers found a brick-sized heat sealed package hidden with loose bricks along the fence line of his family home and neighbouring grandfather’s property.
Inside the package, was $44,800 which he pleaded guilty to being the proceeds of crime, which he had discussed using for a lawyer while on the phone with his girlfriend.
The court heard Dubov gave evidence that he had been addicted to drugs and had mental health issues, with his drug use leading to being sacked as an electrical apprentice.
Judge O’Rourke ruled, given his age and family support, Dubov had good prospects of rehabilitation.
“People, even those in the grips of drug addiction, must take responsibility for their actions,” she said.
Dubov was convicted of commercial drug supply and dealing with the property proceeds of crime and was sentenced to five years and eight months jail. He will be eligible for release on parole in August 2023.
