24-hour gym, swim school planned for Belmore Street East Oatlands
Fitness fanatics will be in heaven if a 24-hour gym and swim school gets the green light in northwest Sydney.

A 24-hour Snap Fitness gym, swim school, medical centre and shops are proposed for Belmore St East at Oatlands but a chemical pipeline, and its location next to a primary school have raised eyebrows.
The gym giant could be the major tenant in the two-storey project at 59-59A Belmore St East, where an indoor recreation facility, neighbourhood shop and a 49-space basement carpark are planned.
The development, planned for a residential neighbourhood, has attracted 20 submissions with residents objecting over developing the site because of its proximity to a high pressure liquid hydrocarbon and its potential to cause contamination, the safety of having a commercial building so close to residents and the impacts construction would have on Oatlands Public School.
However, a council report said the council’s engineer, landscaping, environmental health and traffic officers, as well as Caltex and state government hazard unit experts addressed concerns and deemed the project suitable and in the public’s interest.
The report also recommended the project get the green light because it did not share close boundaries with homes.
Parramatta councillor Pierre Esber said the community had expressed some concerns over parking congestion but the project was welcome among the community.
“Belmore St’s quite a narrow street and people are concerned about people parking on the street but we welcome the gym, the associated shops and the swim school, which is a positive for the area,’’ Cr Esber said.
“There are a lot of young families moving into the area.’’

The Parramatta Local Planning Panel will assess the matter at a meeting on April 20.
