COUNTERFEIT $50 notes have been discovered by an Eastwood butcher, who has warned neighbouring shopkeepers to be on the alert.
L & C Butchery manager Ken Zhong discovered the notes had been passed to staff while checking the till recently.
He noticed the suspect banknotes had a different feel and were in poor condition.
He identified a handful of counterfeit notes which had come into his store in the past couple of weeks.
Police have examined the notes and are investigating.
People who receive suspect banknotes should touch them as little as possible to preserve fingerprints, police say.
They say recipients should note the appearance of the person who passed the fake notes to them and call police.
Ryde councillor Simon Zhou has been liaising with Chinese-speaking shopkeepers at Eastwood and the police.
He said shopkeepers’ confidence had improved since police stopped a spate of stealing offences late last year.
“People were really concerned and they appreciate what the police have done,” he said.
Police had a mobile command vehicle in Eastwood Plaza last week as part of a stall distributing crime prevention advice to shoppers.
Obvious markers of counterfeit money can be dismissed if it has a coat of arms, and a clear window with an embossed wave-pattern.
