EASTWOOD Shopping Centre’s owner is hoping to gain approval for its $276 million redevelopment, which would see seven buildings of up to 13 storeys, before the end of the year.

The Chinese-owned Yuhu Group has been discussing its plans with Ryde Council since lodging the development application last year.

Former NSW treasurer Eric Roozendaal is chief executive of its Australian operations.

The plans would see the centre demolished for new buildings with shops on the lower levels and 440 residential units above.

A major change to the form of the shopping area would be the provision of two pedestrian-only streets through the property.

Called The Street and The Laneway, these would connect Rowe and Rutledge streets.

The revamp would provide a much-needed increase in parking for the town centre. The proposed underground carpark would accommodate 1100 vehicles (residents and shoppers).

The Yuhu proposal includes a voluntary offer to upgrade Rowe St plaza.

Yuhu is still discussing the detail with the council.

The council must compile a report with recommendations for the State Government-appointed Joint Regional Planning Panel, which will determine the application.

Yuhu Group’s general manager property Bob Shin said overall the feedback from the community and council officers had been positive. He said he was hopeful the panel could be in a position to consider the application before the end of the year.

This is not the developer’s first attempt at razing the centre for bigger buildings.

It gained approval in 2009 for works but did not act and permission expired in 2014.
