Even after 50 years with the West Ryde Rovers, Karen Waud’s passion for netball and the club is yet to waiver.
The club president’s love for the sport was honoured on Saturday at Meadowbank Park netball courts as the Rovers surprised her with a special celebration of her 50th year as a player.
Past and present teammates joined club and association officials as well as family and friends for the emotional celebration which saw Ms Waud rewarded for years of love and dedication to both the club and sport.
“It was a bit of a surprise, so she got quite emotional,” her daughter Michelle said.
“Pretty much all of the girls in the club would know her and she’s very much a role model for them.”
Ms Waud’s history with the club includes 25 years as an A-grade player.
It is a position she still holds today.
“To still be playing at the top level after all these years is such an amazing achievement,” her daughter said.
“She coaches as well, so for the girls to have a coach that also plays is a great help for their development.”
