Premier Cricket: standouts, stars, records in round two

In a major bonus for Premier Cricket, NSW big names were released to play in round two. While one made a particularly big impact they weren’t necessarily the stars of the show.

Some of the biggest names in NSW cricket were back in the game after being released for round two of Premier Cricket and one decided to take the opportunity with both hands.

Rising star and Sydney Thunder player Matthew Gilkes, playing for University of NSW against Western Suburbs, scored 200 for the first double century since the 2017/18 season.

It was also the 21-year-old’s sixth century in just 41 first-grade innings, nine of those being in T20 matches.

“It was a good day out. I didn’t expect that,’’ Gilkes said.

In at 1-10, he shared his partnership with Suffan Hassan , whose 110 was his second first grade partnership.

While Gilkes is a name well known in cricket one for the future is Lachlan Shaw.

The teenager, playing only his second game for Northern Districts, scored 107 to eclipse Ian Davis (1971) as the youngest to score a century for the club.

Shaw’s mate Corey Miller scored 262 in second-grade for Northern District – the fifth highest score in that grade which commenced in 1895-96.

In other standout performances;

#Randwick Petersham’s James Seymour, who has come from Melbourne to play for the club, scored 137 in his second match for the club while Jason Sangha’s 95 was his third nineties score, matching the number of first-grade centuries he has scored.

#Marcus Atallah produced career best figures of 6/49, his third five-wicket performance, in the game between Eastern Suburbs and Penrith.

#Tom Jagot scored his seventh century and Aiden Bariol his first, after scoring just a single in the first round, in the first day of the second round match between North Sydney and Parramatta.

#Youngster Brock Larance, just 18, took his first five wicket haul (5/67) in the match between Campbelltown Camden and Fairfield Liverpool.
