Hunters Hill Lawn Tennis Club has been the centre of attention for tennis fans this week as it hosted both the Australian and Slovakian teams ahead of their Davis Cup tie this weekend.
The club was chosen to host the players ahead of Sydney’s first Davis Cup tie in five years, to be played on a purpose-built lawn court at Homebush from Friday to Sunday.
The Australian team, including Bernard Tomic, Sam Groth and Nick Kyrgios, took to the courts over the last couple of days under the watchful eye of Davis Cup captain and Australian tennis legend, Lleyton Hewitt.
When they weren’t practising, the team took the time to enjoy the club’s facilities and mingle with members and fans.
“Tennis Australia approached us about two months ago looking for a lawn venue,” club president Sally Stobo said.
“They needed a lawn club near Homebush and we were lucky enough to be selected.
“It’s been an amazing few days for all of us, we’re honoured to have the teams train here.”
A particular highlight of the week was an exciting hit-up between Australia’s No.1-ranked senior player Nick Kyrgios and the country’s No.1-ranked junior player Alex De Minaur.
“It was certainly a special moment,” Ms Stobo said.
Established in 1894, Hunters Hill Tennis Club is not only one of the oldest tennis clubs in Sydney, but also one of just a few lawn courts left in the city.
Hunters Hill Tennis Club has been entirely member-run throughout its long history, with Ms Stobo having an especially close family connection to the club.
Her father spent his life playing tennis at Hunters Hill and passed that passion down to her.
“To see all of the Australian team together at the club, my dad would be very proud,” she said.
