Macquarie University’s best sporting talents were honoured last week at the 2016 Blues Awards.

This year’s winners were announced in front of a crowd of 230 which included Macquarie University Chancellor Michael Egan and guest MC Fox Sports rugby commentator Sean Maloney.

Six athletes received the Half Blue award while another six were presented with Full Blue awards alongside eight retrospective recipients.

The Female and Male Sport Athlete of the Year awards went to diver Melissa Wu and rugby league player Tom Trbojevic while Rookie of the Year went to rower Tom Schramko.

The prestigious Chancellor’s Award was presented to Australian Water Polo player Tyler Martin.

After making his international debut in 2010, Tyler has gone on to play professionally in France, Italy, Hungary and Brazil while he also made his Olympic debut in Rio earlier this year.

“The Blues Awards was a wonderful occasion to recognise and celebrate the outstanding sporting and academic achievements of our students before their academics, peers and family,” said Macquarie University’s General Manager of Sport and Recreation Cindy Hoad.

“We were delighted to welcome back eight of our Alumni Blues recipients to receive their Blues Blazer on the night.

“It was an opportunity for them to see how far Macquarie University has come and hear about the exceptional achievements of, and make connections with, our current student cohort.”

The Blues Awards recognise personal excellence both athletically and academically in athletes who have represented Macquarie University, their state and the nation each year.
