The heavy flooding in North Ryde and Macquarie Park has left two police officers injured while attempting a rescue.

The two police officers were hurt while helping rescue a driver who had tried to cross the flooded roads early this morning.

At about 6.50am police were called to Pittwater Rd near Blenheim Rd, North Ryde, following reports of vehicles trapped on a flooded road. The roads in and around the area are now also believed to be heavily flooded.

Officers from Ryde police were on the scene with SES clearing the road where a tree had also fallen due to the high winds.

A second tree has fallen while the rescue attempt was underway, landing on the two officers and the car.

A male leading senior constable sustained minor injuries and a female probationary constable sustained serious injuries, including a suspected broken leg.

She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and has been taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The leading senior constable is being assessed for a possible concussion.

Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks said they were hit by a falling tree and a male officer suffered a concussion, while his female colleague broke her leg and was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

He’s reissued requests for road users to reconsider their need to travel this afternoon, but if you are on the road remember to slow down around any emergency response.

“I think this is also a message that when you do see the red and blue lights of our emergency vehicles by the side of the road to slow down to 40kph to give those emergency responders every chance to conduct their operations safely,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command has pushed for people to stay off the road.

“The conditions we are experiencing today are some of the worst I’ve ever seen, and I am appealing to everyone, motorists and pedestrians alike, to take care and get to their destination safely,” he said.

“Once again we are asking all road users to reconsider the need to be on the roads throughout what will be a severe rain event today.”
